Frequently Asked Questions

Appointments & Getting Started

  • To enquire about an appointment, please complete the contact form on the Get In Touch page. Bec will be in touch within 2–3 business days.

  • Bec will be in touch within 2–3 business days with a free 15-minute phone call to get things started — either to complete your onboarding then and there, or to lock in a time to do so.

Bec will call you directly at your preferred time. If she is unable to reach you, she will try once more before leaving a voicemail directing you to get in touch via email.

  • Appointments are generally available within 1–2 weeks for individual therapy, and assessments can typically be completed within 3–4 weeks, subject to availability.

  • A GP referral is not required for individual therapy, relationship counselling, or neurodivergent assessments. However, a valid Medicare plan is required to access Medicare rebates for individual therapy. Please speak with your GP if you would like to claim a rebate.

  • The first session offers an opportunity to explore what has brought you here, your history, and your goals. It is also an opportunity for you to get a sense of Bec's approach and to ask any questions you have. There is no pressure to share more than you are comfortable with. Bec will discuss her initial thinking and her approach to working with you.

  • Sessions are available in person at 620 Bridge Road, Richmond VIC 3121, and via telehealth across Australia. While Bec's preference is for in-person sessions where feasible, telehealth sessions are conducted to the same clinical standard.

Sessions & Individual Therapy

  • Clinical psychologists and psychiatrists have different but complementary roles, and for many people both are relevant at different points in their care.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has specialised in mental health. They are trained to diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe and manage medication, and provide medical oversight of complex presentations. In Australia, most psychiatrists focus primarily on assessment and medication management rather than ongoing therapy.

A clinical psychologist holds a postgraduate clinical psychology qualification and specialises in psychological assessment and evidence-based therapy. Clinical psychologists do not prescribe medication but work in depth with the psychological, emotional, and relational dimensions of a person's experience — often over a sustained period of time.

For many people, particularly those navigating trauma, neurodivergence, or complex mental health presentations, seeing both a clinical psychologist and a psychiatrist is the most comprehensive approach: the psychiatrist manages medication where relevant, and the psychologist provides the therapeutic work that medication alone does not address.

If you are unsure whether you need a psychologist, a psychiatrist, or both, this is something Bec is happy to discuss at the initial phone consultation.

    • Individual therapy — 50 minutes

    • Extended EMDR/trauma session — 90 minutes

    • Relationship counselling initial joint session — 90 minutes

    • Relationship counselling ongoing joint sessions — 75 minutes

  • Bec works integratively, drawing on evidence-based approaches tailored to each person's needs and presentation. Her primary modalities are Schema Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), and parts work — alongside Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills, Emotionally Focused approaches, Compassion-Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI). For relationship counselling, Bec uses Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples (EFCT; Sue Johnson model).

Her approach places particular emphasis on emotional literacy, self-compassion, grief processing, somatic and body-awareness, and the capacity to hold complexity.

  • This varies significantly depending on your goals, presenting concerns, and therapeutic progress. Bec will discuss this with you at your first appointment and regularly review progress throughout treatment.

  • Yes — telehealth sessions are available to clients across Australia via Coviu, a secure telehealth platform. While in-person sessions are preferred where feasible, telehealth is a fully viable option.

  • No — relationship counselling is a standalone service and cannot be combined with individual therapy or neurodivergent assessment at REKNDL Psychology. If you are currently seeing Bec for individual therapy or an assessment, relationship counselling is not available to you or your partner/s at this practice. Similarly, REKNDL Psychology does not offer subsequent individual therapy to any partner following the conclusion of relationship counselling, in order to preserve the integrity of the therapeutic process and Bec's impartiality.

ADHD & Autism Assessments

  • All assessments include a comprehensive developmental history, structured diagnostic interviews using recognised instruments — including the DIVA-5 and the Autism Clinical Interview for Adults (ACIA) — a collateral informant interview (where available), standardised psychological questionnaires completed prior to the assessment, interpretation of results, a feedback session, and a comprehensive written diagnostic report (6–8 pages). The written report is included in the assessment fee and is provided following the feedback session once finalised. Where required, an NDIS-tailored diagnostic report is available as an upgrade in place of the standard report.

  • Prior to your first assessment appointment, you will be asked to complete a number of standardised psychological questionnaires via NovoPsych, an online platform. These questionnaires cover areas relevant to your assessment including attention, autism traits, mood, anxiety, and general wellbeing. Please complete all questionnaires before your first appointment — they form an important part of the assessment process.

  • Assessments typically involve 3–4 appointments completed over 2–5 weeks, depending on your assessment type and availability. If you require a longer timeframe, please discuss this with Bec. Appointments are generally available within 1–2 weeks of enquiry.

  • Assessments are structured as follows, depending on type:

    ADHD assessment

    • ADHD diagnostic interview — 2 hours

    • Collateral informant interview — 1 hour

    • Feedback session — 1 hour

    Autism assessment

    • Autism diagnostic interview — 2 hours 30 minutes

    • Collateral informant interview — 1 hour

    • Feedback session — 1 hour

Combined ADHD & autism (AuDHD) assessment

    • ADHD diagnostic interview — 2 hours

    • Autism diagnostic interview — 2 hours 30 minutes (conducted as a separate appointment)

    • Collateral informant interview — 1 hour

    • Feedback session — 1 hour

  • The collateral informant interview is a 1-hour appointment conducted separately with a person who knows you well — such as a parent, sibling, partner, or close friend — without you present. It provides additional developmental history and context that supports the assessment. Where a collateral informant is not available, this step will be replaced by an extended developmental history review with Bec.

  • Yes — assessments can be completed fully via telehealth, including for clients in regional and interstate locations. While Bec's preference is for in-person assessment where feasible — given the additional observational capacity this allows — telehealth assessments are conducted to the same clinical standard.

  • Both psychologists and psychiatrists can assess for ADHD and autism in adults, but they bring different training and offer different things.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe and manage medication. If medication is your primary goal, a GP referral to a psychiatrist is one pathway. It is worth knowing that there is significant variation in how assessments are conducted across different services — some telehealth psychiatry services take a briefer approach, and the level of written documentation provided to the patient can vary considerably.

Bec's assessments are designed to result in a formal DSM-5 diagnosis with full classification, drawing on clinical interviews, collateral informant input (where available), and standardised questionnaires, and include a written diagnostic report of between 8–20 pages depending on assessment type. Each assessment involves a minimum of 3 appointments and at least 4 hours of contact time — a deliberate choice that allows for a more detailed and nuanced picture of how you think and function across different contexts, making the diagnosis more meaningful and the written report more useful for purposes such as NDIS applications, workplace accommodations, or GP referrals. For more on what is included, see What does an ADHD or autism assessment involve?

A practical advantage of being assessed by Bec is continuity — if you want ongoing support after your assessment, you can move directly into therapy without having to re-establish your history with someone new.

Seeing a psychologist and a psychiatrist is not an either/or decision — many clients do both. If medication is relevant after your assessment, you can share a copy of your written diagnostic report with your GP to support a referral. If you are unsure which pathway is right for you, this is something Bec is happy to discuss at the initial phone consultation.

  • Assessments are available for adults (18+). Bec typically assesses and diagnoses Level 1 and Level 2 autism. She has particular experience with complex and intersecting presentations, including the intersection of gender diversity, trauma, ADHD, and autism, and frequently works with adults seeking a later-in-life diagnosis. Suitability for assessment is discussed at the initial phone consultation.

  • In some cases, yes. Bec may continue to work with assessment clients in individual therapy following the assessment. If you are already an individual therapy client, Bec can also draw on her expertise in ADHD, autism, and AuDHD to support your ongoing therapy.

  • Following an autism assessment and feedback session, Bec will discuss the findings with you and what they mean for your life, relationships, and wellbeing. The written diagnostic report is provided shortly after the feedback session and can be used to support access to services, workplace or study accommodations, and NDIS applications where relevant.

Unlike ADHD, there is no medication that treats autism itself. Post-diagnosis support is typically therapeutic, practical, and identity-focused — exploring what the diagnosis means for you, building on your strengths, and addressing any co-occurring difficulties. Bec can continue to work with you in individual therapy following your assessment if this would be helpful.

If you have co-occurring conditions — such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD — that may benefit from medication, your GP can discuss a referral to a psychiatrist for those specific concerns.

  • No — Medicare rebates are not available for neurodivergent assessment services. This is a Medicare rule that applies universally and is not specific to REKNDL Psychology. Private health insurance rebates may be available depending on your level of cover — please check with your insurer prior to commencing.

  • No — as a psychologist, Bec is not able to prescribe medication. Prescribing is the role of a psychiatrist or GP.

  • If medication is something you wish to explore following your ADHD assessment, you can share a copy of your written diagnostic report directly with your GP — whether by bringing it to an appointment or emailing it ahead of time. Your GP can use this to support a referral to a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist will conduct their own assessment and, if appropriate, initiate a prescription. Once a suitable medication and dose is established, ongoing medication management is typically handed back to your regular GP. Bec is happy to discuss next steps with you at your feedback session.

In Australia, psychiatrist fees for an initial ADHD assessment typically range from $400–$800 or more in private practice, though Medicare rebates apply with a valid GP referral. Dedicated telehealth ADHD services have emerged as a more accessible option for many people and may involve shorter wait times — your GP can advise on referral options, or Bec can discuss this with you at your feedback session.

  • Yes — for both assessment and individual therapy clients, Bec offers expertise in the management of ADHD, autism, and AuDHD as part of ongoing individual therapy. She works collaboratively with GPs, psychiatrists, and other treating clinicians to support integrated care, including medication management where relevant.

  • The pathway after your assessment will depend on your diagnosis, your goals, and your personal circumstances.

Common next steps include pursuing medication via a GP referral, beginning individual therapy with Bec, or exploring NDIS funding following an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis. Clients with a Level 2 or Level 3 ASD diagnosis are more likely to meet NDIS access criteria automatically; Level 1 clients may still be eligible but will need to provide additional evidence of functional impact.

Relationship Counselling

  • Relationship counselling at REKNDL Psychology is open to all adults (18+) in romantic or long-term partnerships — including monogamous, non-monogamous, and polyamorous relationships. Bec takes an affirming and non-judgmental approach to all identities, orientations, and relationship structures, including trans and non-binary clients and LGBTQIA+ relationships.

  • Yes — relationship counselling is structured around joint sessions, with the relationship as the primary client. Sessions 2 and 3 include brief individual sessions with each partner as a standard component of Stage 1 EFT.

  • A typical course of EFT involves 12–16 sessions over approximately four to six months, beginning with weekly sessions and gradually spacing out as the work progresses. Highly distressed relationships or those with complex presentations may require more sessions.

  • No — REKNDL Psychology does not offer concurrent or subsequent individual therapy to any partner involved in relationship counselling. This is to preserve the integrity of the therapeutic process and Bec's impartiality. If any partner is already seeing Bec for individual therapy or a neurodivergent assessment, relationship counselling cannot be offered.

Medicare rebates are available for individual therapy sessions with a valid Medicare plan. Your GP will need to prepare the relevant plan and provide a referral. Bec will process your Medicare claim after each session via Tyro Health, and the rebate will be deposited directly into your nominated bank account. Medicare rebate amounts are indexed annually — current rates can be verified at mbsonline.gov.au.

Several Medicare plans may entitle you to rebates for individual therapy, including:

    • GP Mental Health Treatment Plan (GP MHTP) — up to 10 sessions per calendar year. This is the most common plan.

    • GP Chronic Condition Management Plan (GPCCMP) — up to 5 allied health sessions per calendar year. The rebate for this plan is lower than the GP MHTP.

    • Eating Disorder Treatment and Management Plan (EDP) — up to 40 sessions per 12-month plan period.

    • Treatment Plan for Complex Neurodevelopmental Conditions — up to 20 sessions (cumulative lifetime cap), for people aged under 25 with a diagnosis of a complex neurodevelopmental condition including autism.

Please speak with your GP about which plan may be relevant to your circumstances.

  • No — Medicare rebates are not available for neurodivergent assessment services or relationship counselling. This is a Medicare rule that applies universally and is not specific to REKNDL Psychology.

  • REKNDL Psychology does not process private health insurance claims directly. An itemised invoice will be provided after each session, which you can submit to your insurer for a rebate if applicable. Please check with your insurer prior to commencing to confirm your level of cover.
